Andrew Hugill: Research

Hugill's research is transdisciplinary in nature, with its roots in music. Composition forms the creative backbone of the work, complemented by musicology and research into experimental and digital music. The latter leads into computer science and web-based research, particularly internet music. At the same time, there is an active area of research in (mainly) French literature and culture, focusing on dada, surrealism and 'pataphysics.

Finally, in his capacity as Director of the Institute Of Creative Technologies, Hugill leads various collaborative projects, such as: digital mapping, technology and disability, virtual heritage, and human creativity. This page lists selected publications, outputs and activities, and a full list can be downloaded here.

Books (single-authored)

Hugill, A. (2008) The Digital Musician (New York: Routledge)

"As fine an example of an approachable academic book aimed at technologically literate students as one could want. [...] It is the author’s fascination with music in the digital (or post-digital) age rather than the micro-genres of digital music per se that makes this book so interesting. 'The Digital Musician' is by no means a ‘how to’ book. The author himself clearly states that this was never his intention. Rather the book tackles the often ignored questions of ‘why?’ and ‘what?’ These questions are not only applicable to students of technology and composition, but are those that any sound artist or musician who creates anything worthwhile is continually asking himself or herself. [...] The Digital Musician is a highly stimulating book that asks of its readers as many questions as it attempts to answer. As such it is strongly recommended."

Hugill, A. (2007) 'The Origins of Electronic Music' (book chapter) in The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press)

"The structure of The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music consists of an introduction followed by 13 chapters grouped around three major thematic areas. Part One, Electronic Music in Context, contains four chapters. In the first, entitled “The Origins of Electronic Music,” Andrew Hugill finds the nascent stirrings of desire for sound technology in passages of visionary fiction from the 17th through 19th centuries. It is a refreshing vantage point from which to begin. Taken together with his discussion of early inventions and their transformation into new expressive media, he illustrates the emergence of real sonic art from the collective imagination." pp. 64-65.
