Cellos

The cello is more correctly called the violoncello, and it is the tenor voice in the string section. As with the other strings, the cello section is seated two to a desk, and there are normally ten cellos in a symphony orchestra. In these pages, the cellos are demonstrated by:

Rhydian Shaxson, Cello

Use the navigation bar above to explore the cello pages.

The icon will launch a movie of Rhydian explaining a relevant point of cello technique.

The icon will give an audio clip, which will either play automatically or open a new window.

The icon will play an illustrative music example from the Philharmonia's recorded archive.

Be sure to visit the 'player's tips and tricks' section for some very useful advice about aspects of cello writing.
